Review of “The Promises She Keeps”

The Promises She Keeps by Erin Healy is a novel about Promise, a talented young vocalist with a terminal illness; Porta, an aging witch and art collector in search of the goddess who will grant her immortality; Chase, an autistic artist who falls in love with Promise and opposes Porta.

The premise of the story is very interesting with a hint of mysticism thrown in. And the plot revolves around Promise’s endeavor to gain fame and keep her memory alive before she dies; Porta’s effort to find immortality through Promise’s amazing power; Chase attempt to save Promise and to offer her eternal love.

The plot seems very interesting but it is negated by a very dull and insipid writing. The story seems to go nowhere and there is visibly no logical angle to the whole immortality thing. This book is a disappointing experience for me after the rather gripping Never Let You Go, Erin Healy’s solo debut novel.
