Book Review of Water’s Edge

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 2:20 pm

Water’s Edge by Robert Whitlow is about a young attorney Tom Crane who goes back to his hometown to settle matters of his deceased father’s law practice. He uncovers some unusual incident.

The plot promises lots of potential and had a ring of John Grisham’s style treatment but the story starts slow and it takes time to builds up. But towards the end it does bring in some need excitement.

Personally, I would recommend this book as a pleasant read on a lazy afternoon but don’t go expecting much and you will not be disappointed. And as for the John Grisham angle, I feel it is too laid-back to be even compared; Grisham’s style is more of a heart-pounding , relentless plot structure. All-in-all I would say go for it as a casual read and you will come out fine.

Book Review of The Final Summit

The Final Summit by Andy Andrews is the story of David Ponder – a time traveler who comes face to face with some of the world’s greatest personalities and together they race against time to save humanity from destruction.

The premise of the story is very intriguing and interesting – you get to meet real life heroes of yonder years like Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, etc. Even though it is a fictionalized version, you still get a glimpse of great personalities. As for the plot there is nothing much to rave about but as I mentioned, the sprinkling of real-life stories of yesteryear’s heroes makes up for a great reading overall.

I would recommend this book to all those who are looking for a different kind of book with an interesting historical twist woven into it.

Daddy Dates Book Review

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 6:10 am

Daddy Dates by Greg Wright is about a totally clueless father trying to be a perfect father to his army of four teenage daughters. It explore how the author tried out innovative ways to keep his daughters reined in and also how to keep them positive about the precious relationship between father and daughter.

This book does open up various possibilities of what you can do as a parent to keep your children as close to you as possible. But it is not one that discourse what you should do raise kids the perfect way, the author gives us glimpses of what he did to raise his daughter to be confident women.

It was not what I expected from a book that purports to be a”roadmap for raising the perfect daughters”. I had expected the authors to explore more on the practicality of going ahead on raising confident children. But at the same time it is an interesting book for anyone looking out for innovative ways to raise their children.

Review of “The Promises She Keeps”

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 4:32 pm

The Promises She Keeps by Erin Healy is a novel about Promise, a talented young vocalist with a terminal illness; Porta, an aging witch and art collector in search of the goddess who will grant her immortality; Chase, an autistic artist who falls in love with Promise and opposes Porta.

The premise of the story is very interesting with a hint of mysticism thrown in. And the plot revolves around Promise’s endeavor to gain fame and keep her memory alive before she dies; Porta’s effort to find immortality through Promise’s amazing power; Chase attempt to save Promise and to offer her eternal love.

The plot seems very interesting but it is negated by a very dull and insipid writing. The story seems to go nowhere and there is visibly no logical angle to the whole immortality thing. This book is a disappointing experience for me after the rather gripping Never Let You Go, Erin Healy’s solo debut novel.

As always, this book dwells on the virtue of living life with how God wants us to and in the process outlive our life on earth and how we can be a role model for the coming generations. The book is written in only the way Max Lucado can – in a simple yet practical and uplifting tone.

This book is recommended for any one looking to get a good read about life in particular and looking to live life in its full glory.

Book Review of The Nativity Collection

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 2:28 pm

The Nativity Collection by Robert Morgan is a collection of six short Christmas stories. It consists of six different settings based on the Nativity and introduces you to different yet colorful characters that will capture your heart with a certain dose of emotions thrown in.

The stories which are all on the theme of nativity has each a charms of their own and has a different feel compared to each other. These stories touches all the emotions that you can think of – love, sacrifice, struggle, kindness, suffering, hope, joy – and is told in a manner that is endearing and also warms the cockles of one’s heart. The story of a shy, bookish boy who finds himself center stage in the Christmas pageant, a Pennsylvania family whose car disappears on December 24th, and a mountain man trapped in a blizzard with his grandson on Christmas Eve are all intertwined together to produce an unforgettable effect that will lingers on for a while.

So in conclusion, I would like to say is that this is a must read for anyone in the mood for some Christmas and nativity spirit; and even for someone who would just like to riffle through a brilliant collection of heart-warming stories.

Book review of Ressurection in May

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 5:52 pm

Resurrection in May by Lisa Samson is about May Seymour who found a sense of purpose after a trip to Rwanda. After the whole village, where she was staying, was slaughtered in a Genocide, she found solace in an old man’s solitary farm. And destiny brought her back to respond to a call of distress of her former flame. This book shows how she finally found her faith restored in the treacherous trail of life.

This is the first time I’m reading Lisa Samson’s book. It’s nice and also easy to read. In this book I like the way the author describe God’s faithfulness, his mercy and how he can change the most ugliest thing into something very beautiful. its so wonderful to see he bring people like Claudius, sister Ruth, Eli to restore her relationship with him and bring healing in her life. We think that life is all about us but it’s not  about how we can give it to others. like May thought that she can’t give anything to others but she ended up giving life to Eli’s family when they were going homeless.

I think its a good book for those who think that they can’t give anything to anyone because god had a very good reason of creating you in this world.

Book Review of Never Let You Go

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 3:32 pm

Never Let You Go by Erin Healy is a supernatural thriller about a mother struggling to raise her daughter and keeping her away from all the harm that is threatening her.

For Lexi, her daughter is the only ray of hope after her husband left her. And some mysterious evil seems designed to wrangle her daughter away from her.  Evil comes in the form of a drug dealer called Warden who seems hell bent on inflicting unspeakable harm to Lexi and her daughter. On top of that, Lexi’s estranged husband turns up, further complicating her life. The story revolves around ho Lexi comes out of these predicaments with the help of her faith and how good triumphs in the end.

As a mysterious thriller it fails to grab my attention with the story dragging on for most part of the book. Only in the end does the book picks up a little pace but it is too late for the book to redeem itself as a gripping thriller novel.

Book Review of Plan B

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 3:00 am

Plan B by Pete Wilson is a motivational book for that kind of situations when you feel you can’t take setbacks in life anymore. It explores the various stories in the Bible and tries to find parallels in real life. It also touch upon many real life situations he has encountered.

When I got this book I was expecting it to be the usual “how to live better” kind of book. But as I started reading it, I was more and more engrossed in the way all the problems of life were explored and how they were tied up with examples from the Bible and other real life incident. In other words, it suffice simply to say that it is an motivational book with a complete new touch that I have not come upon before.

So I would recommend this book to anyone who is feeling down and feels that life is not fair. This book has ample examples to show that our life may be difficult sometimes but is not unfair because it is a gift of God and God is always there to protect his gift of love.

Book Review – The Clouds Roll Away

Filed under: Uncategorized — johnmkabui @ 2:42 am

Sibella Giorello’s The Cloud Rolls Away is the second book of the Raleigh Harmon series. And here she is back in her hometown working as an FBI agent after being transferred in the first book. In this book, she tries to unravel a supposedly racial attack on a famous rap star and also is trying to bust a drug racket. And thrown into it is her struggle with her work and personal life and how it intertwines into the cases she is trying to solve.

The book starts sluggishly and then picks up pace slowly and then ends in a somewhat gripping climax – but also making you hankering for more (which hopefully would be fulfilled in the third book of the series coming later this year).

As for my view on this book, I would say it is a pretty good read if you have the patience to read through the first half of the book. Also if you really want to enjoy it thoroughly, I would recommend reading the first book of the series – The River Runs Dry – to really understand what the main character is going through.
